Herbert Roylance was a cousin of Thomas Roylance.
Herbert Roylance was the only surviving son of William and Emma Roylance. He was born in Brisbane, Australia.
He married to Alice Evelyn Roylance, and they lived at 172 William Street, Brisbane, Queensland. He worked as a postal assistant.He was a methodist.
Herbert enlisted in the Australian Infantry on 14 February 1916, aged 29 years. His regimental number was 5664. The unit name was 26th Abttalion, 15th Reinforcement. The AWM Embarkation Roll Number was 23/43/4. The unit embarked from Brisbane, Queensland, and he travelled to Europe on board HMAS A46 Clan Macgillivray, leaving Brisbane on 7 September 1916. His unit from the nominal roll was 26th Batallion.
He died of wounds on 14 October 1917, and was buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery Plot XXX,Row D, Grave No. 1), France. The panel number, Roll of Honour, in the Australian War Memorial is 108. He was posthumously awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
The Queensland Postal Service erected a stone monument on the George Street Postal Building for postal workers killed in the first world war. His name is on the monument.
